Mandy is a Director of Developing ‘U’. Her experience of training and development spans over 30 years, working with both the private and public sectors at strategic and operational levels.
Mandy has experience in all aspects of training and development including analysis, design, delivery, facilitation, evaluation, Vocational Qualification programmes and the Investors in People Award.
Mandy is a Fellow of the Institute of Personnel and Development, a Chartered Manager Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and holds a Level 7 CMI qualification in Strategic Leadership. She is a trained Assessor and Internal Verifier and holds a Diploma in Business Coaching and Diploma in Stress Management.
Mandy has been working in the field of accreditation for 10 years covering all aspects of programme design and accreditation. Mandy has been responsible Vocational Qualifications from Level 3 – Level 7 Strategic Leadership working with the Chartered Management Institute, the Institute of Leadership & Management and Edexcel. Her experience spans a range of clients including the NHS, Local Government, Private Sector Organisations and Charities.
From 2007 – 2009 Mandy was seconded to NHS Somerset as Associate Director of Training and Development. Her role involved overseeing training and development for both the Commissioning and Provider arms. During her time with the Trust she was involved in the commissioning of a range of training including mandatory, nursing, specialised and leadership training which had significant impact on the organisation. She also led major change within the Training & Development Department implementing new systems and procedures and establishing a customer focussed service.
From 1997 -2007 Mandy worked as an independent Training & Development consultant with multi-disciplinary teams across Acute and Community Trusts, Health Authorities and PCTs.
From 1993 – 1997 Mandy worked as a Training Manager in a major Acute Trust where her main responsibility was to establish the internal training function. During this time her work gained acclaim from the King’s Fund, won a TEC bursary through the Gateway Initiative and supported the Hospital in achieving Investors in People status in 1997.
John is a highly experienced training and development consultant with specialism in the fields of trainer training, facilitation and accredited training.
John is a trained Assessor and Verifier holding the D32/33/34 awards, he holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Development, NVQ Level 5 in Training & Development and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development.
Since 2010 John has been working as an Assessor and Internal Verifier working with the qualifications from Institute of Leadership & Management, the Chartered Management Institute and Edexcel covering:

From 1996 – date John has worked as a Director of Developing U, heading up a range of train the trainer programmes for Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health, Hillingdon Mental Health Trust and North Hampshire Hospital Trust. John also managed a 3 year project aimed at eradicating bullying and harassment from a large directorate in an Acute Trust.
John worked for the Management Development Department of Barclays Bank PLC for 21 years, initially as a management trainer, progressing to the Head of Trainer Training before moving onto a lead role in the development of Training Managers within the Bank. During this time his projects included:

Introducing distance and E-Learning and setting up Distance Learning Centres across the UK

John has been involved in several international training projects including assignments in Africa, Greece, Cayman Islands, Bahamas, Germany, Switzerland and Holland. This included delivering Leadership Development training for the Management Centre Europe in association with ERASMUS University (Rotterdam)

John has 10 years of Learning &Development experience designing, delivering and assessing leadership and management programmes, typically for larger organisations. John has considerable experience working in healthcare (developing doctors, clinicians and managers) and local government organisations as well as commercial environments (engineering, manufacturing, retail) and a national regulatory body (GMC). He puts his success as a freelance Learning &Development consultant down to being reliable, effective, professional and respectful. Malcolm Smith has worked at director, divisional and board level for Dow Chemical, Low & Bonar, Courtaulds, Rexam and Inmos. He has a proven and demonstrable track record in profit turnaround in medium to large PLCs. His European experience is extensive, having made acquisitions in Denmark, Germany, France, Holland, Spain and Italy and having managed large and complex multi-national Groups. Malcolm is currently non-executive Chairman of five companies and was awarded Vistage ‘International’s Speaker of the Year Award’ in 2010 and ‘Outperformer’, ‘Most Impact’ and ‘Speaker of the Year’ in 2015 .
Jean Ellis, Dip Couns
Jean is a highly experienced leadership development consultant with over 25 years experience in a wide range of training and development situations. She has a depth of knowledge and experience in the design and delivery of courses in management skills, personal development, coaching skills, assertiveness, change and performance management.
Jean has had direct experience of managing staff performance while working in various management roles for Barclays Bank PLC. She has also had global responsibility for the management of all staff training for a company with a worldwide representation. Since becoming an independent leadership development consultant, Jean has qualified as a counsellor and worked in various fields, most extensively within that of drug and alcohol addiction.
She has been associated with Developing U for over 20 years, working in both the public and private sectors and plays a key role in the delivery of Leadership Development Programmes. More recently, as an example, Jean managed and delivered a 2 year leadership and trainer training programme with Somerset PCT with great success. Her relaxed yet challenging style of facilitation enables candidates to feel at ease when exploring complex attitudes and values and is a major factor in supporting dramatic changes in behaviour.
Susan’s career spans over 30 years in learning and development, with experience in the public and private sectors in Europe and the UK. After graduating she worked for the Financial Times, London followed by several years as a director of studies in an educational charity trust in London and Italy. Since then she has led staff learning and development functions in the NHS and local government. Achievements include; #tying in performance and learning effectively e.g. through implementing medical consultant appraisal (Southend Hospital NHS Foundation Trust) #ensuring learning and training are valued and deliver real service improvements e.g. through gaining investors in people accreditation and working as an assessor for the NHS equivalent, Improving Working Lives (Winchester and Eastleigh NHS Hospital Trust) #making sure talent is managed successfully throughout a person’s career e.g by implementing a groundbreaking apprenticeship scheme for young people in care and putting in place a top level leadership programme Hampshire Own Grown. Susan has particular experience in strategic learning and development working across partner organisations: she has carried out major reviews of L&D functions to ensure the structure and skills are in place to meet the changing needs of the organisation, especially in designing strategies for effective leadership and management development. Her most recent role was with Hampshire County Council as Deputy Head of Strategic Workforce Development. The Council has a workforce of 10,000 staff and Susan led the ‘Great Manager’ work on identifying and implementing 6 key attributes for managers to deal successfully with the challenges such as increasingly person centred care, reduced budgets, exploring shared service arrangements and income generation requirements, facing leaders in the public sector.
Her belief is that we all have it in us to find creative solutions to the challenges we face – and a manager’s job is to unlock that creativity in their teams.
Business/Organisational Leadership Experience
Kate worked as a manager and leader within the oil and gas sector (Amoco/BP and Amerada/HESS Corporation) for some 20 years before working independently. Her major in-house roles were as Head of Organisation Development and Human Resources, Eastern & Western Hemispheres. Kate’s leadership development experience includes the following assignments:
- Design and delivery of a wide range of CMI and ILM programmes in the Public, Private and Not for Profit sectors.
- The design and delivery of a global leadership development programme for international leaders within ABF (Associated British Foods) conglomerate, designed to enable the senior leaders of the organisation to have career coaching conversations with their staff (UK, US and Australia).
- The delivery of a global leadership programme for all HR and L&D staff within Roche Pharmaceuticals building strategic, influencing, consulting and coaching skills (Switzerland, Columbia, Mexico, China and Vietnam) followed-up with group telephone coaching.
- Global leadership development and coaching programme for sales leaders in Cisco’s emerging markets (Brazil, Mexico and Russia) followed-up with telephone coaching.
- A week long leadership development programme for Orange Business Systems, including strategy mapping and individual leadership coaching.

Kate has Masters Degrees in Strategic Human Resource Management and Organization Development. She is an accredited coach through Strathclyde University, and a Career Coach.

Jill has been a trainer for over 25 years and a Coach for over 9 years. She has worked both in the Public sector and Private sector including Banking, Education and the NHS. Jill draws on her professional experiences as a trainer and coach to support staff from every level from new starters to senior leaders and from corporate clients to individual clients.
Jill has been an Acceptable Behaviour Advisor for the NHS for 7 years. She has successfully coached staff in the NHS in bullying and conflict situations in the workplace to a positive outcome. Coaching and mentoring individuals on various aspects of their lives enabling them to move forward by empowering them to make the right decisions for them. Jill has delivered courses on Acceptable Behaviour, Effective Communication skills, Dealing with difficult people and Recognise defuse and manage conflict also Motivational coaching and limiting beliefs. Additionally designing and delivering bespoke courses for organisations as required.
